Aquatic Certifications

Open the door to employment and volunteer possibilities through our aquatic certifications programs. Certification as a lifeguard or swimming instructor can lead to employment opportunities at the YMCA and elsewhere. You’ll also develop leadership skills that can have a profound impact on your future success.

Class Descriptions

Rookie Swim Patrol

Students will learn the basic forms for swimming, treading water, and developing rescue skills. This program is designed for those wanting to work towards getting their Bronze Medallion & Cross certification.

Bronze Medallion & Cross

The Lifesaving Society Bronze Star program helps to prepare 8-12 year old skilled swimmers for success in Bronze Medallion. Candidates are taught about how to make WaterSmart®choices and learn basic lifesaving and resuscitation skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Includes a 400 metre timed swim. Program Requirements Ability to swim 25 metres.

Bronze Medallion is the first of the required courses to become a certified Lifeguard. This course is designed for 13 year olds and older (or candidates that have a Bronze Star certification already). It will teach candidates to keep themselves safe around water and will give them skills to complete a rescue while keeping themselves safe. This course combines First Aid, Water Rescue, Fitness and decision-making skills to not only challenge but energize any student. This course includes a 500m Timed swim as part of the evaluation criteria that our instructors will help prepare you for. The course includes a CPR Level A certification.

Prerequisites: Ability to swim and13 years old by last day of the course

Bronze Cross is the second of the required courses to become a certified lifeguard. The course is designed for anyone that has completed their Bronze Medallion certification. This course will build on the knowledge taught in the Bronze Medallion class and introduce infant choking and CPR skills along with Hypothermia and Secondary Survey skills. This course includes a 600m Timed swim and includes a CPR Level C certification. This course is worth two (2) Grade 11 High School Credits and is the required pre-requisite for the National Lifeguard program.

Complete both bronze lifesaving levels in one exciting course! Bronze Medallion | Bronze Cross Program Requirements: Participants must be 13+ years of age if they have not completed Bronze Star If younger than 13, participants can take this course if they have completed Bronze Star The Canadian Lifesaving Manual.

First Aid

This is a comprehensive course covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Whether you need training for employment or simply want to be prepared to respond to life-threatening emergencies, this course will give you the skills and knowledge to act with confidence. Taught by a certified Lifesaving Society First Aid Instructor using practical activities and hands-on training.

Prerequisites: Recommended 13 years old

Recertification is recommended every 3 years. Program Requirements Completion of Standard First Aid Certificate or Aquatic Emergency Care within 5 years.

This is a Lifesaving Society course and is one step above AED Public Access. Recertification is recommended every year. Program Requirements 14+ years old current CPR-C or Standard First Aid Certificate within 5 years (bring CPR-C or SFA card to class).

National Lifeguard

The National Lifeguard course is the last course in the Lifeguard stream required at pools across Canada. This course will ensure that candidates leave with a solid understanding of Lifeguard principles, communication techniques and develop solid judgement skills for emergency procedures. Candidates will focus on team-work skills throughout the course and learn how to adapt to different aquatic facilities. This course is worth two (2) Grade 12 High School Credits.

Prerequisites: 16 years old by last day of the course, Bronze Cross, 14-16 hour Standard First Aid (from a recognized agency)

NL Pool Option expired? Get recertified. Program Requirements CPR-C (currency strongly recommended) Candidates must bring awards (NL Pool Option and CPR-C) to the first class.

YMCA Swim Instructor

Share your love of swimming with others! As a leader in the pool, you can play an essential role in helping others learn to swim and improve their health in many ways. You will learn a variety of teaching techniques, lesson planning, progressions, and more. To put it all into practice, you’ll also work alongside a certified YMCA Swim Instructor to teach children during a swim lesson.

Prerequisites: YMCA Intermediate Strokes or equivalent (e.g. Red Cross Level 10 strokes) and 16 years of age by last day of the course
