Camps and Outdoor Education
YMCA Summer Camps are where summer happens! We believe that connection to nature is fundamental to helping children thrive, which is why we offer a program for ever stage of child’s journey. Camp Kanannaq, located on the beautiful and quiet Nukko Lake, is the perfect setting for your child to find new friends, discover new experiences, and create new memories that last a lifetime. Our enthusiastic Counselors will build positive relationships with each camper in our inclusive camp community that focuses on the YMCA Core Values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility.
Camp Kanannaq: Solaris and Polaris
YMCA Camp Kanannaq Solaris and Polaris program provides an action-packed day-camp for campers 7 – 12 all the excitement of a summer camp experience! Campers will hop on the Y Bus each morning and sing camp songs until they arrive at Nukko Lake for a day of camp fun including a challenge course, archery, forest games, canoeing, swimming and s’mores. Through our value bead program, campers will be encouraged to create an environment of honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, and inclusivity.
Aurora Leadership empowers youth in a safe environment to build a solid foundation of leadership and technical skills in outcome-based facilitation. This two-week program for youth ages 13-15 teaches campers leadership theory through opportunity and reflection as well as the technical skills associated with delivering camp activities. Campers will build confidence as they lead and gain the knowledgeable outdoor and backcountry skills through a series of day-trips and leadership placements. During the second week, campers will depart on an out trip experience with an emphasis on camaraderie and personal growth that supports campers to learn, grow, lead and thrive.
Borealis guides youth on a journey of self-discovery to continue to grow as leaders. Camper’s journey begins in June as they take-part in pre-camp training to learn about communication, group dynamics, child protection, risk management and programming. Their discovery continues through two-weeks of summer placement under the mentorship of a seasoned camp staff. Campers will have several opportunities to lead with group placements with younger campers throughout their sessions. With an emphasis on leading and working with others, campers will participate in daily self-reflection and program that includes theory, observations, and analysis. Whether campers are working to become future camp staff, are in need of volunteer hours for graduation or simply want a meaningful way to spend their summer, the Borealis program will leave them with fond memories, strong friendships and lasting confidence.
YMCA Outdoor Education brings learning to life as enthusiastic staff guide children through a hands-on learning experience, programmed to meet the BC curriculum. Our program is designed to get kids active and learning outdoors. Children will explore their classroom learnings through an interpretive hike and pond study, staff will guide children through team building activities and finish an interactive camp fire! We welcome elementary schools and other community and youth organizations during May and June.
