Our Commitments to Truth and Reconciliation

In accordance with YMCA Canada’s Statement on Reconciliation, YMCA BC acknowledges the harm and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples. We are committed to:

  • Listening, learning, and reflecting upon the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, the legacy of colonization, and impact on Indigenous Peoples today.
  • Learning about and acknowledging YMCA BC’s role specifically in perpetuating any colonial harms against Indigenous People.
  • Building new relationships with Indigenous communities, nourishing existing ones, and repairing any relationships impacted by colonial harms of the past and present.
  • Decolonizing our programs, services, policies, and practices and further integrating local Indigenous knowledge and teachings.

As part of our commitment, we are developing a robust EDIB strategy and will continue to share updates. If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to us at diversity@bc.ymca.ca.
