Learn About the YMCA

We acknowledge, with much gratitude, that our work takes place on land steeped in rich Indigenous history and the traditional unceded territories of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nations, Saik’uz First Nations, Nak’azdli First Nations, and the traditional territories of the Treaty 8 First Nations. We recognize and respect Indigenous People as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories.

Y Stories

"It has taken a lot to get myself to the point that I would even think of approaching the gym on my own to inquire about a membership. However, I did, I cannot tell you what the YMCA has done for me. I am starting to feel better about myself physically, but most importantly, I really look forward to that time to myself, I deserve it! It has helped me to see my value and not feel guilty as a mother taking that time to myself because I realize that I deserve that time, I need that time, and by placing new beliefs on myself that I AM worth it, I DO deserve this, I have found a new confidence in myself."

"The YMCA has supported my love of movement and my quest for fitness for three decades. I am honest with my instructors about my many physical limitations, yet each one of them welcomes me into the classes. They show me encouragement and have allowed me to go at my own pace to modify moves so that I do not injure myself. The support I receive every time I walk into the Y has allowed me to face my limitations and to accept them with dignity."

"After a fall in 2011 I could not walk and could barely stand. With encouragement from my friend I joined the YMCA. A workout program was established for me from a YMCA trainer. I also saw a massage therapist at the YMCA. Now with the help and encouragement I can walk with a cane. I definitely attribute my recovery to my commitment and support at the YMCA."

"If it were not for the funding provided, my children would not have been able to attend Camp Kanannaq. She has really grown and learned a lot about herself during her time. She has learned she loves hiking and being outdoors. She loves being a leader and a role model to others and would like to work with youth in the future. Camp has given her so much to build on and continues to offer more opportunities for growth."

"I am so happy that you guys picked grade 6 students to get a membership! Some things I like to do at the YMCA are going on the treadmills, going onto the equipment and going to the gymnasium. One of my favorite things to do in the whole building is the play structures! It is really fun to go play tag on it and to just play around. The reason why I like going to the YMCA is that you get to work out but do it in a fun way."

"My story is typical, got busy after becoming a mother, and slowly packed on the pounds. Attempted over the years many different ways of losing weight, from diets to machines at home, swimming, and walking with friends. It wasn't until my doctor diagnosed me with high blood pressure at 30 years old that I began to that think about getting healthy. Someone had mentioned that the Y had great rates and a REC Room. I looked into it, signed up myself and my two kids and have been accessing for about a year steady now. In the beginning, it was more for my health, as time progressed it became about teaching my daughter to enjoy exercise and to get my son active while making new friends rather than spending time on a PlayStation or computer. It was originally for me, but now it's for all of us."

"During my time in the Youth Works program I received very helpful skills for job searching and also solidified my career choice in learning about myself. I feel that the certifications also helped me so that I can find work easier many jobs require First Aid or Food Safe. The resources provided and skills taught are very valuable to anyone who is in need or not sure how to find work. I recommend this program to anyone!"

"When the dust finally settled after my son’s arrival, I had mixed emotions about bringing him to the gym with me. I was eager to regain my strength and escape the isolation of new-momma-hood, but I was nervous about leaving him in the care of a stranger. The childminding staff were kind, patient and took the time to answer all of my many questions. I looked around the room and was happy to see age appropriate toys and a comfortable area for babies. I’ve been taking Parker to the YMCA with me since he was three-months old and I am truly grateful for the YMCA staff. I don’t think they could ever understand the impact they have had on my transition into motherhood."
